IIT Kanpur Virtual Lab: Materials Science Simulations
Developed frontend and all simulations for IIT Kanpur Virtual Lab in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, as part of the national Virtual Labs project. Virtual Labs is an initiative of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). IIT Delhi is the coordinating institute, with twelve participating institutes; over 175 Virtual Labs and approximately 1590+ web-enabled experiments are designed for remote operation and viewing. The work is live on the institute’s virtual lab website, where students run experiments in materials science and metallurgy. Delivered 10 experiments covering microscope construction, surface preparation, microscopy, stereological principles, microstructures of steels and cast irons, metallic materials, tailoring microstructure, and quantitative techniques. Each simulation is hosted and accessible via the official IIT Kanpur Virtual Lab (virtual-labs.github.io) links below. Virtual Labs do not require any additional infrastructural setup; simulation-based experiments can be accessed remotely via the internet.
The Story
The Problem
Students needed hands-on, browser-based experiments for materials science and metallurgy without physical lab access. IIT Kanpur required a consistent, maintainable frontend and simulation suite for their virtual lab platform.
The Solution
Built frontend and simulations for 10 experiments in collaboration with IIT Kanpur. All experiments are live on the IIT Kanpur Virtual Lab website (virtual-labs.github.io), linked below. Focused on clear UX and accurate simulation behavior to support student learning.
My Approach
Collaborated with IIT Kanpur to deliver frontend and simulation logic for 10 materials-science experiments, all published on the official IIT Virtual Lab (virtual-labs.github.io).
Vision & Objectives
- •Virtual Labs is an initiative of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, under the National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT).
- •IIT Delhi is the coordinating institute; twelve participating institutes form the consortium.
- •Over 175 Virtual Labs consisting of approximately 1590+ web-enabled experiments for remote operation and viewing.
- •Intended beneficiaries: all students and faculty of Science and Engineering colleges who do not have access to good lab facilities and/or instruments.
- •High-school students, whose inquisitiveness can be triggered, possibly motivating them to take up higher studies.
- •Researchers in different institutes who can collaborate and share resources; engineering colleges who can benefit from the content and teaching resources.
- •No additional infrastructural setup required at user premises; simulation-based experiments are accessed remotely via the internet.
